BUILDING THE DREAM
Great architecture starts with a great site. Great sites are hard to come by and usually not without challenges to overcome along the way. Maybe its an irregular shape, an awkward orientation, a steep slope or one of the many typical planning constraints such as heritage, flooding or bushfire overlays? Believe it or not but often these irregularities or “challenges” are what ends up making the final building so special. As architects our added value is to identify the challenges and turn them into opportunities though design, a bit like the oyster takes the irritating grain of sand and transforms it into a pearl.
For the average client, identifying the challenges and opportunities on a site is not obvious..
…and thats why its a good idea to engage your architect early on (even pre-purchase) to help work through the possibilities and formulate a “brief”. Together with site constraints and opportunities, the brief will include all the anticipated functions and desires of the inhabitants and a building budget. As a starting point this forms the building blocks of the initial concept which develops and evolves as the design progresses.
